On June 17, 2021, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family, Joel David Rogers (86) made his way into Heaven to be with his loving wife and daughter. He was born to John and Myra Rogers on March 21, 1935 in Stevenson, Alabama. Joel was a devoted husband to Margie for 51 wonderful years and a doting father to their two daughters, Renay (Mark) Wattenbarger and Lesley (Chris) Gayton. He was Papaw to Gray Wattenbarger, Leigh (John) Hollingsworth, Cory and Tate Gayton, as well as a Great-Papaw to Luke Hollingsworth. He served honorably in the Army from 1954-1957, traveling and building planes while stationed in France. He was also on the Army’s bowling team, even though he’d never bowled before. Joel worked for Sears for 32 years before retiring to be a full-time Papaw in 1997. He attended every sporting event, school musical, and choral festival Gray & Leigh participated in. They chaperoned multiple choral competition trips to Florida and were grandparents to any child in need of love. The couple had a craft business where Joel did woodworking and Margie painted. They created beautiful things together and leave behind a legacy of love in those crafts. They were both active members of Grace Baptist Church in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. After retiring, Joel and Margie traveled all over the United States together, exploring and touring everything they could. He is preceded in death by his wife, Margie, his parents, John & Myra, his siblings, and his daughter, Renay. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Joel’s name to the Disabled Veterans Foundation.
The family would like to extend their greatest thanks to the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard for their memorial presentation honoring Joel's military service.
